Entry requirements

A minimum of 4 subjects at grade 5 or above at GCSE including English Language at grade 5. Maths is required at grade 4 or above. 

What will I study?

Across two years, you’ll explore the criminal world from every angle through four engaging units:

Year One

  • Changing Awareness of Crime (Controlled Assessment) - Discover the many types of crime, how the media shapes our understanding of criminality, and how campaigns influence public awareness.
  • Criminological Theories (Exam) - Explore the major theories behind why people commit crime, from biological influences to psychological motives and sociological pressures.

Year Two

  • Crime Scene to Courtroom (Controlled Assessment) - Follow the journey of a crime from the moment it’s reported to the final verdict. Investigate the techniques used by forensic specialists, police officers and legal professionals.
  • Crime and Punishment (Exam) - Examine how laws are made, what justice looks like, and the different forms and purposes of punishment used in our society.

Method of delivery

Criminology lessons are interactive, varied and packed with opportunities to think like a real criminologist. You will:

  • Engage in case study investigations
  • Take part in group debates and collaborative tasks
  • Carry out independent research

How will I be assessed?

Your final grade is based on:

  • 50% Controlled Assessment
  • 50% External Examinations

You’ll complete one controlled assessment and one exam in Year One, and the same again in Year Two.
