York School of Art students design recipe cards for Radfield Home Care

York College & University Centre’s BA (Hons) Graphic & Communication Design students served up a feast of ideas after being tasked with producing a set of recipe cards for Radfield Home Care.

Undergraduates in the first and second years of our three-year York School of Art course collaborated on the project with the former assuming the role of content creators and the latter brand designer responsibilities.

Their work was then presented to Radfield Home Care General Manager Marco Polledri in College’s Cube360 Immersive Room after he had commissioned the live brief.

The split in duties saw Level 4 learners focus on food photography and illustration and Level 5 students concentrate on the logo and recipe card creation.

Each card showcased recipes provided by staff and clients of the private home care providers, which were accompanied by personal stories to explain their choices.

York College BA (Hons) Graphic & Communication Design Course Leader Monica Gabb said: “The cards will be used by Radfield as marketing tools and celebratory materials and the project intentionally split responsibilities to reflect the real-world collaborations that take place between content creators and brand designers. The Year 2 students were brand designers, working on making the recipe cards look unified, consistent and professional with special attention paid to logo, colour pallet, typography and layout.

“Our Year 1 students, meanwhile, were the content creators, producing all the photographs, illustrations and GIFs that the Year 2 students then placed into branded templates.”

From a highly competitive field, Michelle Smith was judged to have produced the best design by Marco.
