Students Living in York

We approach student living a bit differently. While we don’t provide traditional student accommodation like halls of residence or shared student houses, we’re here to support you in finding the right living arrangements before starting your higher education journey with us.

To assist you, we’ve compiled a list of local letting agents and providers.

Purpose-built Student Accommodation

These are private halls specifically designed for students and developed by private companies. They typically offer a similar setup and atmosphere to on-campus accommodation, often with modern facilities and communal spaces.

Below are some excellent accommodation providers in the York area:

Letting Agents

Whether you prefer to live on your own, as a couple, or with a group of friends, renting through a letting agent could be the ideal choice for you. Shared student houses (HMOs) are a popular option that offer a balance of independence and community.

Other Alternatives

Alternatively, you can explore accommodation platforms, where you can rent a room or space in a home with a live-in landlord. This is a great way to experience a more homely environment.

Do You Need Accommodation?

Before arranging accommodation, ask about your course timetable, as many of our degree programmes run over just 2 to 3 days per week. This means you may be able to commute or stay locally in a hotel for a few nights instead of renting full-time.

We design our timetables to be as compact as possible, giving students flexibility to work part-time or manage other personal commitments alongside their studies.

Paying For Your Accommodation

You can use your Student Maintenance Loan to help cover accommodation costs such as rent and other living expenses.

The amount you receive depends on factors like your household income, where you study and your course. Your loan will be paid directly into your bank account in instalments throughout the year, so you can budget for your accommodation and living costs as you go.

Top Tips For Renting Private Accommodation

When choosing accommodation, there are lots of factors to consider, such as if you're going to live alone, with house mates, or a landlord, the type of accommodation you're looking for, how close it is to your place of study etc. It's important to make sure you do your research and take your time to review your options before signing contracts etc.

1.) Budget - it's important to consider your budget and what you can afford when choosing somewhere to live. Your maintenance loan will help cover rent and other costs, so make sure you've applied for this through Student Finance.

2) Distance - make sure that you choose an area that is easily commutable for you. Various providers offer a range of accommodation close to York College University Centre.

3.) Who will you live with? - you may choose to live alone, with house mates, or a landlord. If you decide to live with someone, make sure they are the right fit for you and don't feel pressured into choosing who to live with.

4.) Make a checklist - create a list of things to ask the landlord/accommodation provider when looking for accommodation. This could include asking about the WiFi/internet capabilities, noise levels in the area, how long the tenancy is for etc.
