York College Rugby League Performance Programme in Partnership with York RLFC
York College is proud to offer an exciting, bespoke Rugby League Performance Programme in partnership with York Rugby League Football Club, open to both boys and girls. This two-year course is designed for students who play Rugby League to a high standard and want to combine elite-level training with academic achievement.
Students will work towards the Pearson BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sports Coaching, a nationally recognised qualification that provides a strong foundation for careers in sport and progression to higher education. Alongside this, learners will gain professional coaching accreditation with CIMSPA and achieve a Level 1 Rugby League Coaching qualification, ensuring they graduate with industry-recognised credentials.
The programme delivers the best possible experience by combining academic study with professional coaching and development through York RLFC.
- Monday and Wednesday mornings are dedicated to academic study at York College.
- Tuesday and Thursday focus on coaching, strength and conditioning, and technical training with York Knights and York Valkyrie at York St John University.
- Students will also compete in the College League and play for York RLFC on Saturdays, gaining invaluable experience in competitive Rugby League environments.

Entry requirements
A minimum of 5 GCSEs at grade 4, to include English and Maths.
What will I study?
You will learn the fundamentals of sports coaching, covering topics such as health and well-being, sports development, self-employment in sport and physical activity, applied coaching and complete a research project.
In addition you will be offered the opportunity to lead applied, vocational coaching sessions with a range of partner employers from the sports and coaching sector. There is also the opportunity to gain additional, specialist coaching qualifications.

Method of delivery
Academic study and sports coaching will be delivered in person.
Academic study will be delivered on the main campus at York College. Rugby Coaching will be delivered at York St John University's sports facilities, including the strength and conditioning suite and 3G pitch.
How will I be assessed?
You will evidence your skills, knowledge and understanding through an evidence-based portfolio and completion of assignments. Evidence will consist of worksheets, posters, assignments, observation, witness testimonies, case studies and practical work.
Good course combinations
This is a full-time course. It is not possible to combine this course with other Vocational, T Level, Apprenticeship or A Level programmes.
Your next steps
The course is designed to aide student athletes to progress with their professional sporting careers. The academic component of the course allows students to progress directly into industry, due to nationally recognised coaching affiliation and National Governing Body certificate. Alternatively, Students can elect to continue to higher education, with the most common courses being sports coaching, sports massage and sports & business management.
Career progression includes Athlete, Sports Coach, Sport Community Activity Officer, Fitness and Wellbeing Adviser and Personal Trainer.
