“In my previous job as an electrician, I was working away from family on the tools a lot. We had kids who were at the rugrat stage – they’re still only seven and five now – so I was missing a lot of critical time with them.
I took the risk of completely changing career direction and was lucky enough to get a job as a property surveyor. With that came the option to work more locally and it was the company’s suggestion that I went on the HNC course.
They have put one or two people on the course over the past few years and received really good feedback on it. The new job and course were away from my general expertise and niche, which was the electrical industry, and they require a more broader understanding of the construction industry, but both have been great.
Returning to education was daunting at first, stepping back into a classroom for the first time in 17 years, but I’m glad I did it. What an experience!
I met some great people and I feel I’ve really lucked out to have a HNC in my back pocket now.”

“I had no real expectations at the beginning, but I just decided to give it a go and I got a First.
It all feels quite surreal, especially being a mature student and having taken a few years of different courses to build up to this. I’d done up to my Level 5 and thought there was nowhere else to go with my education.
I had no real intention of doing a degree but, then, I saw the top-up course for Level 6 and I thought it was great that I could complete a degree in a year. I literally decided to do it a week before the course started after I saw it online and checked with College that I qualified for it.
I was a bit apprehensive whether I’d fit into it, especially being older and whether I’d actually be up to that level. I had to get used to everything like referencing, studying and navigating the online systems again, because my Level 5 had been eight years before but, by Christmas, I think I’d got into a good flow and routine.
I ended up finishing the course having gained more confidence in myself and with the knowledge that I am capable of that level of study and actually know more than I thought!”

“I decided to choose this route of study as I’d worked in the beauty industry for a long time and decided I wanted to pass on my knowledge and experience through teaching. As I was studying during covid, I learned how to teach online using different resources, which is a real skill. I also really enjoyed my placement, it was great to put my skills into practice.
Studying at York College University Centre was great, the location is very convenient and the flexible study model meant I could fit the course in around my other commitments. My tutors were always very supportive and were there for me every step of the way.
I’m now teaching and have since completed my Assessor’s Award.”
