At York College we place a great deal of emphasis on work-based learning and applied experience, a critical part of this foundation degree, as it will develop your communication skills and business acumen. We provide a pitch side sports therapy service to the Sports Development Centre teams and run the Sports Injury Clinic at the College, giving you plenty of practical experience. Sales from the clinic go back into the course resources, ensuring great facilities for students.

Entry Requirements

Non-standard entry: Applicants who have relevant skills and experience but who do not hold the standard minimum entry requirements will be considered. Applicants will be required to demonstrate the necessary skills and experience to enter the course through their personal statement.

Duration and Attendance

This is a two-year full time course. Subject to validation after successfully completing the foundation degree you will have to opportunity to progress to degree level studies via a one year ‘top-up’ in Sports Therapy at York College, one of York St John University pathways, or go into the workplace using the qualifications you have gained.

You will study in a vibrant, fast-paced environment which includes a dedicated sports therapy clinic, a sport and exercise sciences laboratory, a fitness suite and a range of other state-of-the-art sports facilities.

Assessment Methods

Assessment will be continuous via a wide range of methods, including practical exams, presentations, reflective activities and independent projects.

Some of the additional vocational qualifications, which are optional, may also require the submission of portfolio evidence and the completion of externally set and marked exams.


Successful completion of the FD Sports Therapy will enable you to enrol on the BSc (Hons) Sports Therapy to convert your qualification in to a full honours degree.

As both the FD and BSc (Hons) programmes have been designed in collaboration with the Society of Sports Therapists, students are eligible for student membership with the Society.
