Course Content

Students will acquire basic communication skills in German in familiar situations; this includes subjects such as:

  • Introducing yourself
  • Talking about where you're from
  • What you do for a living
  • Ordering food and drink in a bar
  • Handling money and shopping for food
  • Understanding what there is in town and simple directions
  • Booking and checking into a hotel
  • Using public transport

The course consists mainly of classroom tuition with activities organised around the skills of speaking, listening and reading.

Teaching Method(s)

There is a practical approach to the subject, involving listening to recorded material spoken by native speakers, pair and group work to practise speaking and reading graded material.

Exams and Assessments

Regular in-course assessment will enable learners to monitor their progress and this will be reviewed by the tutor. There is no external assessment. The emphasis is on having fun while learning and using the language to communicate.

There is no formal qualification for this course. You will receive a College Certificate of Attendance to show you have attended.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will there be homework?

Small, optional amounts – it’s always a good idea to review and practise at home.

Do I need a text book?

Some classes decide collectively that they would like this. It’s always helpful to have access to online dictionaries and online language learning apps can be recommended.

Students will be able to progress from Beginners 1 to Beginners 2, later in the year. Students who complete Beginners 2 will be able to progress into Continuers 1 and 2 in the second year.
