Hospitality Supervisors work across a wide variety of businesses including bars, restaurants, cafés, conference centres, banqueting venues, hotels or contract caterers. They provide vital support to management teams and are capable of independently supervising hospitality services and running shifts. They typically work under pressure delivering fantastic customer service and motivating a team is essential to their role. The majority of supervisors’ skills and knowledge are the same but supervisors may specialise in specific functions or work across a variety of functions which reflect the multi-functional nature of the industry. This apprenticeship can lead on to becoming one of the following:

  • Food & Beverage Supervisor
  • Bar Supervisor
  • Housekeeping Supervisor
  • Concierge Supervisor
  • Front Office Supervisor
  • Event Supervisor
  • Hospitality outlet Supervisor

York College will work with employers and key players in the sector to prepare and equip you to be successful in your career.

Qualification and Level

Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Hospitality Supervisor. You will develop the knowledge, understanding, skills and behaviours (know it, show it and live it) in relation to customer service, people with whom you work, the hospitality business and leadership. As a Hospitality Supervisor you will select one of the following operational areas in line with your specialist function:

  • Food & beverage Supervisor
  • Bar Supervisor
  • Concierge Supervisor
  • House-Keeping Supervisor
  • Events Supervisor
  • Hospitality Outlet Supervisor

Method(s) of delivery

Delivery will be in partnership with employers and adopt a blended approach of on and off the job training and professional development. Apprentices will receive training and mentoring in the workplace and knowledge, skills and behaviour development at York College through classroom based ‘Realistic Working Environment’ activities and it may involve experience in the award winning Ashfields Restaurant.

Entry Criteria

Employers will set their own entry requirements, but it is expected that the individual would have worked with an operational role within the industry to start on this apprenticeship standard.

There is a requirement to have literacy & numeracy skills equivalent to GCSE at grade C/4 or Level 2 Functional Skills in English and maths.

Apprentices must also have achieved a Level 2 Hospitality Apprenticeship or have substantial industry experience which will be assessed at interview.

The apprenticeship includes Pass and Distinction grades with the final grade based on the apprentice’s combined performance in each assessment activity.


Based on the entry requirements the minimum duration for this apprenticeship is 12 months.

Progression from this apprenticeship could be into a hospitality management position.
