If you want an exciting and varied career, barbering could be for you. There is a demand across the country for skilled and qualified barbers, and employers increasingly need committed, well trained and enthusiastic workers. You will work as part of a team in running a salon by shampooing, conditioning, styling, cutting, colouring and reception work and therefore gaining valuable employability skills.
To start the course you must be employed in a relevant environment for a minimum of 30 hours per week. You should ideally have a minimum of 3 GCSEs at grade 3 or above (or equivalent) including Maths and English at grade 3 or above (or equivalent)
Students with international qualifications will need to have them converted, for which there will be a cost, through the national agency for the recognition and comparison of international qualifications and skills (NARIC) website. This is required to confirm they are comparable to UK qualifications at the start of the programme in readiness for gateway and the end point assessment.

Delivery will be in partnership with employers and adopt a blended approach of on and off the job training and professional development. Apprentices attend College one day per week, and work for their employer the rest of the time. The apprenticeship takes one year to complete. Students may need to attend extra sessions on an additional day or block for Maths or English.
You will work though the units of delivery and build up a portfolio, which is a collection of examples or evidence of your work that establish your skills and ability, such as a work diary, photos, statements from your employer and colleagues and examples of completed tasks. Once you have completed all of your units and portfolio you will be put forward for an End Point Assessment in which you will then demonstrate your practical skills
Job opportunities following completion of this qualification include Junior Barber, Barber, Colour Specialist, self-employment, or progression onto the Advanced Barbering Apprenticeship Level 3.
