Who is this course aimed at?
This course aims to help people who would like a Functional Skills qualification in English or who would like to do a GCSE but haven’t been in education for some time. We can help you develop your English skills prior to a GCSE course
You do not need formal qualifications, but would be expected to have an assessment interview to place you on the correct level course.
If you have previously gained a Functional Skills English qualification, you can enrol to the next level.
Dates and Times
Daytime and evening courses are available. Most are 2.5 hours per week.
Courses start in September 2020 and run until June 2021. You can join a course in September, or January.
You will have the opportunity to improve:
Writing: spelling, grammar, punctuation and types of text
Reading: skimming, scanning and for detail
Speaking and listening/communication: discussions, presentations, following instructions
The course is delivered by experienced tutors using a variety of interesting resources.
We will work with you to identify the things you need to work on in order to achieve your goals. Sessions are friendly and fun and allow you to work at your own pace.
There are two written exams (one Reading, one Writing) and a speaking and listening assessment. Functional Skills exams can be taken at regular times throughout the course, when you are ready.
For most people the course will be FREE as they are funded by the government. However, if you already have a GCSE grade C/4 or above in this subject, are studying for a higher education qualification, or haven’t lived in the UK or EU for the past three years, there may be a fee.
Reasons to choose this course
We encourage students to reach their potential as quickly as possible, and are happy for them to attend more than one session a week.
There are dedicated L2 classes that offer focussed work and can lead to progression to fast track GCSE English in January.
If you would like to enrol, you can do so via our Enrol Now page.
