York College

Who is this course aimed at?

This course might be of interest to those involved in engineering or product design, CAD draughting, preparation of files ready for 3D printing and similar activities. Even though SolidWorks can be used to create and form of 3D object it is not specifically designed for areas such as architecture, landscaping or modelling organic objects (such as animals or plants).

Previous attendees have included those wishing for a career change or to position themselves for promotion within their current organisation or simply to carry out a current job more effectively in the areas mentioned above.

Overview of the course

The Level 1 Award is an introductory course in 3D Computer Aided Design. Using either Solidworks 3D CAD software, students will develop skills in practical sessions and learn some of the theory behind 3D computer aided design.

Anyone signed on to the course will be given a code to download a free version of SolidWorks software onto their home computer which is licensed for a year.

Entry Requirements

This course is suitable for complete beginners to CAD, although experience with using a PC would be a definite bonus: basic file management techniques etc. it would also be beneficial for beginners or casual/occasional users to gain a good solid foundation in using SolidWorks or who wish to gain a formal qualification in Computer Aided Design.

Dates and Times

22nd September 2020 - 2nd February 2021, Tuesday evening.

Course Length

17 weeks.

Course Modules/units

Level 1 Award in Parametric Modelling

Computer Aided Design Using Parametric Modelling Software

Teaching Method(s)

The course is taught in one of our CAD computer suites and is mainly a “hands on” experience. There is a small amount of background theory to learn, but mostly the lessons will be a series of demonstrations followed by you using the software to complete a series of exercises. The tutor is on hand to assist and answer any questions.

There are 2 practical assessments taking approximately 3 hrs each, and a simple, short written test.

The course is graded at Pass/Merit/Distinction.

 £150 - £390.

Reasons to choose this course

In previous years we have had an excellent success rate with a high percentage of Distinction grades.

Skills you will develop

It will provide a basic understanding associated with IT, CAD hardware and operating systems, and basic file management techniques, as well as giving a basic understanding of the parametric modelling process (3D) and its user interface.

Students will be able to use a range of commands to create and constrain sketches, produce extruded and revolved features, placed features to modify parametric models, and methods to create assemblies.

Course progression

There is a natural progression to the Level 2 Award and the Level 3 Certificate for those wishing to progress.

Career progression

Depending on other knowledge, experience and qualifications: Junior CAD technician.

About the course tutors

Mike Hume has successfully completed 4 recognised courses in SolidWorks, starting in 2009.
