The level 3 Certificate comprises any 2 of 3 available Level 3 units. At York College we are offering only 2 (see below under dates and times). A third unit, “Using 2D Computer Aided Design Software” is available and if you already have this and want to attend just one of these units then please contact the college for details.

This qualification takes a more advanced look into Computer Aided Design (CAD) to assist in the creation, modification, analysis, or optimization of a design through the use of 3 dimensional (3D) software. Learners will use SolidWorks 3D CAD software to generate and edit advanced models/assemblies using data driven parameters, create complex drawings including annotations using multiple view layouts.

You will also be creating and modifying existing 3D objects, either surfaces or solids, at any position within Three Dimensional Space.

Entry Requirements

A good working knowledge of SolidWorks 3D CAD software is required. For example, by completing the City & Guilds Level 2 Parametric CAD course or by using the software as part of your job etc. If you are unsure that you have sufficient experience then please contact the course tutor: This email address is being protected from spambots. Course Content

All learners will complete the following units:

  • Computer Aided Design Using Parametric Modelling Software
  • Using 3D Computer Aided Design Software

Parametric Modelling - using a parametric modelling workstation safely, use advanced features when modelling, create advanced assemblies, create and modify table driven parts and assemblies, and create presentation graphics. You will also learn to repair errors in a CAD file.

3D CAD - set the 3D modelling environment, construct and edit 3D surface models, construct and edit a 3D solid model, apply commands to manipulate a 3D model, apply commands to view 3D models in a variety of display formats and output a 3D model drawing layout. Boolean operations will be investigated. You will also learn about a range of file formats that can be exported from a CAD programme.

Exams and Assessments

Assessment for each unit is by way of a short (3 questions) written test & two timed, assessed tasks to check your knowledge. Each of the practical assessments have a duration of approximately 3.5 hours

How You Can Progress

This provides learners with the skills and knowledge required for employment as a designer or draughts person or progress onto further learning in preparation for entry into the Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering sector.

Learners could progress onto an advanced and/or higher apprenticeship in Engineering or onto further learning through other qualifications such as:

  • City & Guilds Level 3 Diploma in Engineering (QCF) - 600/0881/7
  • City & Guilds Level 4 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering - 600/6874/7

This qualification could lead to job roles in Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering such as:

  • Design Engineer
  • Draughtsperson
