Types of Work Placements
Industry Work Placements: These placements are part of the incoming T Level qualifications which will help students to hone their technical skills whilst gaining vital on-the-job training. These are 315+ hour placements where the student will come to you 1+ day per week over months and work on site along your team members. An Industry Work Placement is 45+ days per academic year and is negotiable in terms of timing to fit in with your business. The video below will help to give you a flavour of what T Levels are all about.
These placements allow the student to flourish so they can become an integral part of your organisation over the course of the placement and apply their valuable and increasing technical knowledge in the workplace. A great way to work this into your business model is by planning for a student to work on alternate days to your apprentice if you have one. If not, it is a great way to work with York College in partnership, get to know our students and to see how we can work together collaboratively. Members of the Work Placement Team are happy to discuss this further with you to help you plan how best to work a fantastic York College student into your existing company structure.
Standard Placements: These 35-hour placements can be spread across 5+ weeks or can be completed in College holidays where a block may be possible. These types of placements are a fantastic taster if you are thinking of taking on a longer-term Industry Placement or an apprentice in the near future or want a brief placement to assist with short-term projects.
York College students are skilled, motivated, social media savvy and can engage with your organisation to both learn and contribute to the business.
How You Can Give Back to Your Industry
We hope to partner with you to allow our students to access opportunities which will widen their knowledge and skills beyond their studies. We also hope they can gain general experience and acquire further skills to cultivate themselves, thus ensuring that they are workplace ready in the future and have experience which will help them to move smoothly into the workforce.
Your support in this is vital to give back to your industry so that it can grow generation after generation.
All York College students who require work placements are aged 16 and above and have been taught about workplace behaviours and attitudes. They will have received guidance from course tutors and the Work Placement Team about the type of organisation and workplace which would be most beneficial and the work that they are able to do.
