Duration

The Diploma courses in Carpentry and Joinery consist of:

Level 1 Diploma – 1 Year
Level 2 Diploma – 1 Year (successful completion of Level 1 Diploma or Level 1 Extended Certificate to progress to Level 2)
Level 3 Diploma - 1 Year (successful completion of Level 2 Diploma to progress to Level 3)

What will I study?

Level 1

  • Principles of building construction, information and communication
  • Maintain and use carpentry and joinery hand tools
  • Prepare and use carpentry and joinery portable power tools
  • Produce woodworking joints
  • Health, safety and welfare in construction

Level 2

Students follow either the Site Joinery or Bench Joinery route.

Site Joinery

  • Health, safety and welfare in construction
  • Principles of building construction, information and communication
  • Carry out first fix flooring and roofing
  • Carry out first fix frames, partitions and stairs
  • Carry out second fixing operations
  • Carry out carpentry maintenance
  • Set up and operate a circular saw

Bench Joinery

  • Health, safety and welfare in construction
  • Principles of building construction, information and communication
  • Set up and operate a circular saw
  • Produce setting out details for bench joinery products
  • Mark out from setting out details for bench joinery products
  • Manufacture bench joinery products

Level 3

Students follow either the Site Joinery or Bench Joinery route.

Site Joinery

  • Health, safety and welfare in construction
  • Carry out first fix flooring and roofing
  • Carry out second fixing operations of organising, planning and pricing construction work
  • Carry out first fix roofing and stairs
  • Carry out second fixing double doors and mouldings
  • Set up and use fixed and transportable machinery

Bench Joinery

  • Health, safety and welfare in construction
  • Principles of organising, planning and pricing construction work
  • Set up and use fixed and transportable machinery
  • Manufacture shaped doors and frames
  • Manufacture stairs with turns

How will I be assessed?

The Diploma is assessed using both practical and online multi-choice tests.

What could it lead to?

On completion of each Diploma students can progress on to the next level where appropriate, or go on to find employment in order to transfer to an apprenticeship, then higher level courses in Construction.
