The main duties and tasks of a Surveying Technician are:
- To collect information from inspections or visits to buildings, land and construction sites
- To take appropriate measurements of buildings, land or plans
- To meet with other professionals, clients, customers and others to obtain and provide information relating to land, property or construction
- To collect and record data relating to land, buildings or construction for technical use
- To manage work tasks relating to the area of practice
- To undertake costings and/or measurements and/or valuations using data collected from research
- To ensure a safe working environment for themselves and others

The occupations covered by this standard are associated with surveying technicians acting on behalf of clients or employers in an assistant capacity and these include:
- Building Surveying Technicians
- Land Surveying Technicians (including rural, minerals and waste management and planning and development)
- Valuation Surveying Technicians
- Consultant (Professional) Quantity Surveying Technicians
- Consultant (Professional) Project Management Technicians
You will have GCSE English and Maths at grade 4/C or above or have achieved Functional Skills in these subjects at Level 2. To start the course, you must be employed in a relevant role for a minimum of 30 hours per week.
Level 3 Surveying Technician Apprenticeship Standard which will include the Level 3 Diploma in Construction & the Built Environment.
Method of Delivery
This is delivered on a day release basis – one day per week in College during term time – and then rest of the time will be with your employer.
End Point Assessment
Apprentices will need to successfully complete the Level 3 Diploma and the portfolio of evidence before they are able to go forward for the end point assessment. The end point assessment is the RICS Associate assessment. This is a substantial piece of work, typically taking around 3 months to complete and will include:
Summary of experience
The summary will include the development of knowledge and skills. This will summarise the knowledge and experience the apprentice has gained over the period of the apprenticeship for each of the RICS Associate competencies. This will comprise of 3000 words.
The case study is an account of a project or piece of work with which the apprentice has been involved and will focus on the technical competencies. It will provide detailed evidence of the apprentice’s ability to apply knowledge in practice and will comprise of 2500 words and a template is provided by RICS for the submission.
A record of a minimum of 48 hours of continuing professional development
Apprentices will be required to submit a record of a minimum of 48 hours of continuing professional development (additional learning) for the 12-month period prior to the end point assessment. 50% of the continuing professional development must be of a formal nature such as professional courses, seminars and online events. Apprentices will be required to identify the objective of the activity and to give a reflective account of the outcome and learning gained.
This is the final stage and is an online ethics module provided by RICS. This module includes online learning and an online multiple-choice test. The ethics module will demonstrate that the apprentice has achieved the behaviours set out in the apprenticeship standards.
The apprenticeship will provide the necessary knowledge skills and behaviours for successful apprentices to become Associate members of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors. Successful apprentices will then be able to progress on to higher level qualifications.
