Why Construction Contracting Operations?

This is a structured programme of training and development allowing career progression within many disciplines within construction operations (e.g. estimating, quantity surveying, planning and site management).

Students will begin to develop a broader knowledge of business functions by working in numerous business areas both in support service departments and as part of operational teams.

What will be studied?

NVQ Level 3 in Construction Contracting Operations

Level 3 Advanced Technical Extended Diploma in Constructing the Built Environment (Technical Apprentices)

Mandatory Units:

  • Operate health, safety and welfare systems in construction
  • Prepare programmes and schedules of work in construction
  • Operate project information systems in construction
  • Develop and maintain working relationships and personal development in construction

Optional Units:

  • Prepare for, collect and present survey data in construction
  • Record the condition of property in construction
  • Integrate and control project design information in construction
  • Prepare drawings and schedules in construction
  • Prepare and process invitations to tender in construction
  • Prepare estimates, bids and tenders in construction
  • Prepare for work operations in construction
  • Implement contract work in construction
  • Establish and maintain the dimensional control of construction works
  • Prepare for and carry out physical testing in construction
  • Assess, pan and monitor project methods and progress in construction
  • Monitor, maintain and improve supplies of material in construction
  • Prepare and monitor costs and accounts in construction
  • Prepare proposals and obtain feedback for the provision of products and services in construction

Are there any entry criteria?

Four GCSE grades at C/4 or above. In addition, you also need to be employed in the construction industry in an appropriate technical job role.

Method of Delivery

Apprentices attend College for 1 day a week for the duration of the course.

How is the qualification assessed?

For the NVQ you will build up a portfolio with the support of an assessor, which is a collection of examples or evidence of your work that demonstrates your skills and ability, including a work diary, photos, statements from your employer and colleagues and examples of completed tasks.

Assessment of the Diploma consists of one online exam per year contributing to 40% of your overall grade and one written assignment contributing to 60% of your overall grade.

The Diploma is a Level 3 Advanced Technical Extended Diploma in Constructing and the Built Environment with 6 units per year (12 in total). 


1 day per week for 2 years.

What next?

On completion of this apprenticeship, students can progress onto HNC qualifications and careers in the construction industry such as site management, estimating, design, planning and other technical roles.
