What will I study?

The course is aimed at students who have an interest in working with children in Early Years and Primary settings. It has been designed to support development of knowledge, understanding and skills when caring for and supporting the learning and development of children aged 0–11 years 11 months.

The qualification is made up of 6 units which include:

  • Play and learning
  • Exploring legislation
  • The role of the childcare practitioner
  • Nutrition

There will be a one-day placement setting. Allocation of this placement day will be given out prior to starting the course. You will also need to complete a Professional Skills Record, which will be carried out in a placement setting of 120 hours of real work experience.

All classes are taught in College, however there will be opportunities to take part in trips which are related to the units taught.

How will I be assessed?

In addition to the completion of a Professional Skills Record, there is a short answer exam which will be graded Pass, Merit or Distinction. Students must achieve a Pass in this exam to gain the qualification.
