This is an exciting two-year course delivered through inspirational projects by tutors and practitioners in well-equipped studios and workshops. Students will be introduced to wood, metal, ceramics, mixed media, fine metal and glass.

Entry requirements

A minimum of 4 or 5 GCSE subjects at grade 4 or above including English and/or Maths. The Art and Design Diploma Level 2 qualification at Merit grade will also be considered as part of the entry requirements. You will be invited to show a portfolio of your art and design work at your guidance discussion.

What will I study?

During the two years you will have demonstrations and workshops to introduce you to the following subjects, techniques and processes:

  • Wood - carving and furniture
  • Metal - forge work, casting and welding
  • Ceramics - slab building, coiling, throwing and glazing
  • Mixed Media – mould making and plastic forming
  • Fine Metal - soldering, enamelling and jewellery
  • Glass - slumping, moulding and fusing

You may follow up subjects such as jewellery, furniture design, ceramics, theatre set design, product design, industrial design, car design, sculpture and crafts.

During the course you will work in sketchbooks and on design sheets to collate your ideas. You will also work in workshops and on Apple Macs to ensure your work is professional and well presented. You will have the opportunity to work on live projects with links to industry and you will build a portfolio of your own work for employment or higher education applications here at York College or elsewhere.

Throughout the programme there are educational visits to galleries, workshops, museums, exhibitions and places of specific interest to extend your awareness of the wide range of contemporary creative activity.

At the end of the course you will work on a Personal Project in a specialist area, which will be exhibited in the Creative Show for parents, practitioners and VIPs.

Additional costs
There is a cost of £75 in total for this course. £35 for a mandatory Art Kit and £40 student contribution that is used to enhance the students learning through the availability of additional resources and activities. You will also need to purchase appropriate PPE - more details of both will be provided before you enrol.

Method of delivery

You will typically be in College three days per week which will also include any GCSE English or Maths resits you may need to undertake - you cannot undertake both GCSEs at Level 3. In-College delivery is supported by online resources and potentially trips and visits to support primary research within project work. The course is designed in three stages: An Induction stage to the different processes in 3D Design, followed by a Project to put these elements into practice and culminating in a Final Exam Question.

The second year of the course is similar in structure to year one but is designed to give you more independence within your project work and your Final Major project is negotiated. The course helps you build on prior knowledge as well as developing strong independent learning skills to equip you for your next progression step.

How will I be assessed?

Continuous assessment of your portfolio of project work, with feedback on your progress in one-to-one tutorials as well as a final major project with a new and exciting theme each year. There is a test element to Year one of the programme where you will be asked to produce a PowerPoint and evaluation based on a chosen theme. You will be able to showcase your Final Major Project in Year two at the end of year Creative Show.

Good course combinations

This is a full-time course. It is not possible to combine this course with other Vocational, Apprenticeship or A Level programmes.

Pheobe Li 3 D Design Crafts Level 3

“I really like this course because there are no exams and I am able to develop my independence. The College has a friendly environment where tutors are helpful and considerate. There is a great range of materials and machinery to use throughout your studies.

After College I will be going to university to study Product Design at a higher level. My dream is to become a designer one day.”
