This qualification will provide classroom theory, practical learning and a 3 month industry placement with an employer. It has been developed in collaboration with employers and businesses so that it meets the needs of industry and prepares the students for work.

Entry requirements

A minimum of 5 subjects at grade 4 or above including English and Maths.

What will I study?

The Technical Qualification is the main classroom-based element of the course and consists of two components:

Core Content

This provides students with the knowledge that underpins the industry with topics which could include safeguarding, supporting education, special educational needs and reflective practice.

Occupational Specialisms

Students can choose to specialise in a specific field which could include early years education and childcare, assisting teaching or supporting and mentoring students in further and higher education.

The industry placement allows students to develop their subject specific skills as well as those necessary to working in any environment, such as effective planning, working with others, health and safety and promoting equality and diversity.

Additional costs
Prior to starting the course students are required to complete a successful Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS), for which there will be a charge. A York College placement top will also need to be purchased.

Method of delivery

There will be a two-day placement setting. Allocation of this placement day will be given out prior to starting the course. You will also need to complete workplace assessments which will be carried out in a placement setting of 750 hours of real work experience.

All classes are taught in College, however there will be opportunities to take part in trips which are related to the units taught.

How will I be assessed?

Core knowledge is assessed through a combination of written exams and an employer-set project. Specialist knowledge and skills are assessed through a combination of a written exam and practical projects.

Good course combinations

This is a full-time course. It is not possible to combine this course with other Vocational, Apprenticeship or A Level programmes.

Your next steps

Students may progress in to employment, an apprenticeship or higher level study, including university.
