This course is aimed at people who have an interested in engineering; maybe for a hobby, interest, home project or even beginning a change in career. This is specifically metal turning.

You will just need to bring your own steel toe capped boots and overalls. We will provide all other safety equipment, tools and materials etc.

Overview

As well learning about health and safety, you will experience a general introduction to using a manual lathe to turn metal (mild steel). You will cover the basic principles of turning, work holding and other ancillary devices, measuring equipment, and will produce a basic component using fundamental cutting processes.

Facilities

This course will take place in a well-equipped mechanical engineering workshop.

At York College our students have access to a fantastic range of College-wide facilities such as the Learning & Research Centre, study hubs, computer areas with accompanying multi-function printers and helpdesk advice.

Skills you will develop

The course is practical and based in our College engineering workshops. The tutor will demonstrate techniques and processes, correct and accurate use of tools and equipment and will support you through practice activities to develop your skills and knowledge.

Course progression

If there is enough interest, a 6 week York College Certificate will run.
