Simple Back Massage (Beauty Therapy)
This course will interest those who wish to learn how to perform a simple back massage for relaxation purposes. Students might use such skills to provide massage to friends or family.
Students will both give and receive a back, neck and shoulder massage during the short training event using a selection of massage mediums provided by York College.
Entry requirements
There are no formal entry requirements, but students must be in suitable health to be able to take part fully in the activities (students may be contra-indicated under medical grounds).
Course units
Students will be required to complete the units below to gain the certificate:
- Basic anatomy of the back
- Simple massage movements that can aid relaxation and help with tension across the back and shoulders
- Contra-indications to massage
- The benefits of massage
- Aftercare advice
Assessments
Students who complete all tasks will receive a York College certificate of completion.

Course progression
Successful completion of this course allows for progression on to NVQ 3 Certificate in Body Massage.

Study methods
Students will be introduced to simple back massage techniques and will have practical demonstrations from a tutor before practicing their skills.
Facilities
York College have 2 large fully equipped hairdressing salons, an inviting commercial salon reception, 3 media make-up workshops and 2 beauty therapy salons. Adult learners will have access to professional products and equipment (including Loreal and Eve Taylor).
Students have access to a fantastic range of College-wide facilities such as the Learning & Research Centre, study hubs, computer areas with accompanying multi-function printers and helpdesk advice.
Additional costs
Whilst there are no additional costs, students are encouraged to wear black trousers and top (it is important that these are comfortable and non-revealing). Flat shoes, that fully support the foot are essential.
Career progression
This course will enable students to enter employment in the hair and beauty industry, or simply gain a new skill for fun.
