This course is aimed at adults who wish to further extend their skills in Beauty Therapy. (Students must hold a Beauty Therapy Level 2 qualification prior to enrolling on the Level 3). The course will include a substantial amount of home study to meet the demands of the qualification, therefore, students must be able to allocate time at home to complete these activities in addition to attending College two nights a week. Regular attendance each week is vital for successful completion.
Students will learn the skills required to qualify as Beauty / Spa Therapist at level 3. Whilst lessons are predominantly practical-based, there will be elements of theory covered during the sessions which will require further study at home.
Students generally require a minimum of three GCSEs (or equivalent) at grade D/3 or higher to gain entry to the course. Mature students may be exempt from this requirement if they have appropriate work experience/life skills or additional qualifications. In addition to this, students must also already have achieved a level 2 Beauty Therapy qualification (or have suitable salon experience).
Students will need to demonstrate enthusiasm and interest in the subject and have a genuine desire to both provide and receive Beauty Therapy treatments. This course requires students to follow a strict dress code. For reasons concerned with health and safety students must tie up long hair (so that it is off the face and neck), remove all jewellery and piercings and keep nails short and product free. Students will be required to stand for long periods of time. Whilst treatments can be relaxing to receive, providing some treatments (massage for example) can be physically demanding. Certain medical conditions are contraindicated to treatment (please seek further guidance from the tutor).
Students will be required to complete the units below to gain the qualification:
- Body Massage
- Indian Head Massage
- Hot/Cold Stone Massage
- Facial Electrotherapy Treatments
- Body Electrotherapy Treatments
- Client Care and Communication
- Health and Safety
- Promotion of Products and Services
Observation of practical skills (students are graded Pass, Merit or Distinction)
Oral questioning to check understanding
Portfolio of evidence – showing all the treatments that have been completed
Online tests for each unit
Please note - the College will not be able to provide all the clients for this course, students are expected to be able to provide some of their own. Students are expected to work on a diverse range of clients.
The fees for this course can be supported by a loan, if you feel you may qualify for an available loan, or wish to discuss financial options, please contact the Funding Team.
Successful completion of the Level 3 course allows for progression on to the Level 4 Diploma in Salon Management available at York College University Centre.
Dates & course durations

Tutor input and demonstrations are followed by practical application of skills and knowledge. Assignments, work packages and portfolio-building are an integral part of the programme and home study is vital for completion of theory work.
