Art School: Introduction to Pattern Drafting - Basic Bodice Block
This course will introduce the core skills of pattern drafting, which will enable you to draft your own basic bodice block (hourglass or straight fit) to create simple patterns.
This course is aimed at individuals who have basic machine sewing skills, who would like to learn how to draft a personalised basic bodice block to create their own patterns from.
If students have a sewing machine at home, they should tell their tutor on the first evening; while sewing machines are available for use, it is very helpful for students to use their own domestic machine and will enable you to familiarise yourself with your own equipment.
Entry requirements
Basic machine sewing skills are desirable. No pattern cutting experience is required.
Course units
You will be guided through how to create your own personalised pattern block and the various techniques which will enable you to alter a bodice and sleeve block (non-stretch). During the course, you will learn how to alter you pattern by moving the position of darts and transforming the bodice into panels.
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
- Draft a bodice block to your own measurements
- Move the darts and create panels
- Use balance marks, grainlines, and other technical information
- Add seam allowance to your pattern
