Higher National Diploma (HND) Creative Media Production – Game Development
Computer game development, which includes educational as well as recreational gaming, is a growth area within our sector and it has been identified in the government’s strategy for the digital economy as a key area for development. This course is therefore designed to provide specialist work-related skills and knowledge in a range of gaming sectors.
This course will help further develop the skills, individual experiences and practical understanding necessary to achieve a successful career in the game development industry. You will study in an environment where emphasis is placed on employability and work-related knowledge, allowing you to gain insight into what life is really like in the industry and how you can apply your understanding into the workplace.
This course aims to enable you to develop a successful career in Games Design and Development engaging professionally with common challenges such as the specification, design, development and management of games for a range of platforms.
It will provide you with the fundamental skills and knowledge in a range of software used within a commercial environment, with professional development and research to develop the skills that employers value so highly.
You will be enrolled as a full-time student at York College which has recently been awarded Institute of Technology status. This has enabled the college to invest in substantial improvements to digital equipment and a University Centre with exclusive access for higher education students

Successful completion of Higher National Certificate (HNC) Creative Media Production (Game Development) or equivalent Level 4 qualification.
Maths and English GCSE at Grade 4 (or equivalent) also required.
Applicants with be required to provide a portfolio of evidence of prior learning in a related subject.
How will I be assessed?
Students will demonstrate knowledge and skills through a combination of coursework and practical activities. A wide range of assessment styles are employed, such as: walkthroughs, practical work, portfolios of evidence, formal reports, seminars and presentations.
A full assignment schedule will be published at the beginning of the year to ensure that the workload is well balanced throughout the year.
Skills you will learn
Throughout the course students will develop skills in sector-specific practical skills, 3D modelling, animation, presentation skills, rendering and lighting skills, industry knowledge, visual communication skills, character art skills and creativity, game mechanics and programming and marketing techniques.
Method of delivery
The programme is predominantly aimed at level4 HNC progressing students who aspire to excel within the Games Development industry. It is expected that students will have completed a related level 4 programme prior to starting the course, whether that be in game development or another relevant subject and made significant progress towards the creation of a games design and development portfolio during their education.
There are no additional mandatory costs within the programme, however it is suggested that students engage with course materials outside of the college, therefore, access to a computer with course software would be an advantage.
Your next steps
On successful completion of the Level 5 Higher National Diploma it is expected that students will seek to maximise their capabilities of entering the workplace through a Top-Up to a full BSC Degree. Students may seek entry level roles, as an animator, games developer, illustrator, web designer, computer graphics artist or even a multimedia specialist.
