This level 5 qualification will greatly develop your skills in filmography, providing you with both the technical, practical elements and the theoretical knowledge required to meet the professional standards expected for a successful career in the global film industry.
This programme will provide you with the opportunity to combine the process of media production with a professional working environment. Skills will focus predominantly on you as a creator and producer, as well as providing you with the opportunity to apply an experimental approach to your work. Through various encounters, a broad perspective of the industry in the community will be achieved.

Your next steps
This course is a standalone qualification, recognised by employers in the industry. Upon successful completion you will be equipped with the technical skills and theoretical knowhow to succeed in a number of jobs, including camera operator, film/video editor, runner, sound technician, production coordinator or freelance digital production professional.
Method of delivery
In an ever-changing media landscape, this course equips you with the skills needed to work in a digital creative industry that works across different platforms. The College’s Media team is part of the Creative Curriculum Area. As such we make use of a range of cameras, post-production equipment and hardware that is common in industry. York is a UNESCO City of Media Arts and Leeds is home to Channel 4 and a wealth of independent production companies. We are ideally located to make the most of new developments in the industry and the HNC and HND are stabled alongside our other successful media courses.
How will I be assessed
Assessment is via practical coursework and research reports.
This one-year programme is designed to develop both production and critical skills within the media. Activities include seminars, lectures, workshops, and production sessions. Assessment is specific to each unit but build on the holistic skills built throughout the course.
Skills you will learn
Throughout the one year course students will develop skills in time management, critical and creative thinking, scheduling, teamwork and collaboration, interpersonal skills, working to a brief, reflective and evaluation skills and building your initiative.
has been teaching all aspects of media theory and practice for more than twenty years. Before working in education Simon worked in print and television journalism and marketing. His interests include the role of new technologies on the media landscape and the impact this has on society, working practices and culture industries. He has run and taught on Media Production, Multi-Media and Sociology degrees in the past as well as the NCTJ’s Pre-Entry Certificate in Journalism. He is adept with both video and graphic design software.
Chelsea has a Masters Degree in Sport Journalism, she has written for Land Rover Owners International and NRTH LASS magazine, and worked as a multimedia and PR assistant at both Leicester City Football Club and Sheffield Wednesday Football Club. She has also interviewed for the Ultimate Boxing League in Leicester and has completed client based work for an NHS hospital and local businesses. Chelsea teaches on a range of media courses, including A level, Diploma and Extended Diploma in Creative Media Production. She also run’s the College’s Digital Arts Saturday club and has firm knowledge of video editing software. Chelsea’s interests are photography, classic films and television and film theory.
and is currently studying the Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training while teaching in Media Studies, Creative Media Production, and Creative Games Development. She has five years’ experience in digital marketing, B2B social media marketing, graphic design, and creative writing, with interests in filmmaking and gender representation in fiction.
