A minimum of 5 GCSE subjects at grade 4 or above including English and Maths.

What will I study?

This qualification covers a wide range of key subject areas in health and social care. The Extended Diploma includes a wide range of optional units, allowing you to pursue an interest in the specific areas of social care, health studies and health sciences, whilst still allowing enough diversity for the optional units to be tailored to suit your preferred progression path. This qualification promotes high quality care and support and has been mapped to the standards within the Care Certificate.

Placement is a crucial element of your journey. Listed below are some examples of appropriate settings which could support you:

  • Adult residential care home
  • Nursing home

  • Health centre
  • Supported/Sheltered accommodation

Additional costs

You will be required to complete a successful Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check prior to starting the course, for which there will be a charge. There is an optional cost to purchase the course textbook.

Method of delivery

Your studies will be across three or four full days per week. These will be mainly classroom based but you will also experience practical sessions in our simulation care unit. Your studies will have a combination of 30% online learning and 70% face to face on site, with 90% classroom based and 10% undertaking simulated practical activities.

Our methods of delivery will include delivery to large groups of students online, accompanied by workshops, tutorials, some independent studies, problem solving and work-based learning. You will also undertake a substantial work experience in a health care setting relevant to your studies.

How will I be assessed?

All units are assessed through a portfolio of evidence and one extended assessment. All portfolio evidence is internally assessed and externally moderated. The extended assessment is externally set and externally marked and moderated. Your work will be graded within the range A* - D.

Good course combinations

This is a full-time course. It is not possible to combine this course with other Vocational, Apprenticeship or A Level programmes.

Your next steps

On completion you could progress on to employment, the Higher National Certificate/Diploma in Health & Social Care at York College, or to other higher education and degree courses at other universities, such as nursing, midwifery, occupational therapy, social work, teaching and many more, or advanced/higher apprenticeships.
