Fitness Instructing (Gym-Based Exercise) Certificate Level 2
This YMCA Level 2 course offers an enjoyable blend of practical activities and theoretical study that will prepare you for progression onto Level 3 courses. This licence to practice qualification is CIMSPA accredited and is therefore recognised by employers as enabling you to enter employment in the job role of fitness instructor in the fitness and leisure sector.
A highly practical course, you will develop your theoretical and human body knowledge to work effectively in the Athletic Suite with clients to develop and deliver fitness programmes.
3 or 4 subjects at grade 3 ideally including English and Maths.
What will I study?
Modules studied include:
- Anatomy and Physiology for Exercise
- Health, Safety and Welfare in a Fitness Environment
- Principles of Exercise, Fitness and Health
- Planning Gym-based Exercise
- Instructing Gym-based Exercise
You can re-sit GCSE Maths and/or English alongside this course.
Method of delivery
The practical element of the course will involve working in the Athletic Suite. You’ll also study a range of theory sessions to develop your knowledge, skills and understanding of theories that underpin fitness You will also take part in some client facing sessions.
How will I be assessed?
You will be assessed by two online multichoice exams, Anatomy & Physiology and Principles of Training. You will complete some workbooks and have one summative practical assessment.
Good course combinations
This is a full-time course. It is not possible to combine this course with other Vocational, Apprenticeship or A Level programmes.
Your next steps
On completion of this course, you will have an industry recognised qualification enabling you to start to work as a fitness instructor immediately.
You will have the skills and knowledge necessary to plan, deliver and evaluate safe and effective fitness instruction sessions via the context of gym-based exercise. Once you have successfully completed this qualification, you will be able to gain access to the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs) at Level 2.
The majority of students progress on to a Level 3 Personal Training qualification or take up employment in the sport and leisure industry.
