Computing Extended National Diploma Level 3
In the first year, you will complete the National Foundation Diploma in Computing. This qualification helps provide all of our Level 3 students with a good grounding in the digital technologies that underpin all modern computer applications, ranging from desktop, to web, to smartphone, to the exciting new areas of robotics and the internet of things. This qualification is equivalent to 1.5 A Levels.
In the second year, you will complete the units necessary to achieve the Extended National Diploma in Computing. This is designed to support students who would like a strong core study of computing to enable progression to roles in the computing industry or progression to higher education with a focus on the computing sector. It is equivalent in size to 3 A Levels.
4 or 5 GCSE subjects at grade 4 or above including English and/or Maths. Please note that a Merit in any relevant Level 2 course (Extended Certificate or above) will also be considered as part of the entry requirements.
What will I study?
For the National Foundation Diploma qualification you will study six units which include:
- The Principles of Computer Science
- The Fundamentals of Computer Systems
- IT Systems Security and Encryption
- Business Applications of Social Media
- Website Development
You will study six further units which include:
- Planning and Management of Computing Projects
- Software Design and Development Project
- The Impact of Computing
Method of delivery
You will typically be in College three or four days per week. In-College delivery is supported by online resources, and students develop strong independent learning skills to equip them for their next steps.
How will I be assessed?
You will be assessed through a combination of externally marked exams, externally assessed projects and internally assessed assignment work.
Good course combinations
This is a full-time course. It is not possible to combine this course with other Vocational, Apprenticeships or A Level programmes.
Your next steps
These Level 3 qualifications provide entry into higher education, with a view to progressing to roles within the computing and digital and creative technologies sector. Subjects that some students have gone on to study include Games Development, Cyber Security and Forensics, Web Development, Multimedia, Graphics and Animation, Networking and Cloud Computing, Mobile Apps and Social Media Development, and Software Development.
This qualification also offers a direct route into apprenticeships or employment working in user support, as hardware or software technicians or data processing.
