City & Guilds Level 1 Diploma in Stonemasonry
This course allows candidates to learn, develop and practise the skills required for employment and/or career progression in stonemasonry.
This course is suitable if you want to gain knowledge of the construction industry as a Stonemason. This course will give you a taste of aspects of the construction industry and will cover a range of hand-skills, practical tasks and theory lessons consisting of the following:
- Principles of building construction
- Information and communication
- Principles of stonemasonry
- Setting out and templet making for stonemasonry components
- Working stonemasonry components
- Fixing stonemasonry components
- Health, safety and welfare in construction
Entry requirements
There are no formal entry requirements for this course, however, a genuine interest in the subject and outstanding commitment and enthusiasm is essential.
Course units
A range of basic skills and techniques will be introduced including a combination of the following:
- Principles of building construction
- Information and communication
- Principles of stonemasonry
- Setting out and templet making for stonemasonry components
- Working stonemasonry components
- Fixing stonemasonry components
- Health, safety and welfare in construction
In addition to covering the principles of construction, stonemasonry and health and safety, it covers the following skills:
- Setting out and templet making
- Working stonemasonry components
- Fixing stonemasonry components
Assessments
Practical and theory work will be assessed in line with awarding body requirements.

Course progression
On successful completion of this course students can progress on to a Level 2 Diploma in Stonemasonry.

Study methods
This course will be delivered by qualified experience tutors who are experts in their disciplines. Teaching will be done in a practical setting which will allow you to spend the time using the tools and resources.

As well as specialist construction workshops, students have access to a fantastic range of College-wide facilities such as the Learning & Research Centre, study hubs, computer areas with accompanying multi-function printers and helpdesk advice.
Additional costs
All materials are provided for you to complete the course. However, some courses may require additional study from home, you may need access to a PC/laptop and suitable Wi-Fi to access teaching and learning. You will be made aware of any additional study time at the time of enrolment.
Career progression
Students will be equipped with the skills and knowledge required to progress in their current employment or enter employment in the construction industry. You may also have the option to transfer to an apprenticeship and then progress on to higher-level courses in construction.
