Higher Education students studying Graphic and Communication Design at York College have worked on a live project for global media advertising agency Publicis Media, producing an advertising campaign for Airbnb.
Working on a Branding, Identity and Implementation module, the students were given a brief to come up with ideas for an advertising campaign for Airbnb, designed for a specific target audience. Their task was to produce three static poster adverts and one moving image animation, based around research, objectives and outcomes. The students’ designs were judged by Publicis Media in London, with each student receiving constructive feedback on their work from the media agency.
Second year BA Graphic and Communication Design student Matthew Weston was delighted be announced as the winner of the project, with his prize being further work experience with industry experts Publicis Media. Matthew said: “It was a great experience. I really enjoyed getting someone from the industry to give me feedback, which allowed me to imagine what my future could be. Talking to Publicis Media helped me to understand the industry more and how it differs from college projects. Everyone's submissions looked great but I'm happy to have won and I look forward to potentially working with Publicis Media in the future.”
Conall McMenamin, Design Lead at Publicis Media, was very impressed with the standard of work produced by the students: “They all understood the needs of the client and worked creatively within the Airbnb brand guidelines. Matthew’s work was particularly strong in that he came up with an excellent concept, responding to the current circumstances. His campaign showed understanding of the motivations of the intended audience and the emotional hook behind it. #UKtion is a great tag line and plays really well to social media engagement. Well done Matthew – we are looking forward to keeping in touch with you and hopefully working together.”
Clare Nattress, Course Leader for the BA (Hons) Graphic and Communication Design course at York College University Centre said: “Working with industry partner Publicis Media gave our students the wonderful opportunity to create design work for an Airbnb campaign. Not only did our students have a real insight into the creative industry but they grew in confidence and impressed the team with their professional design solutions. Their step into industry, once they graduate, will become a natural progression with a portfolio that is bursting with ideas and real clients.”
