After three successful years hosting the Art&Design National Saturday Club at York College, this year members have worked creatively alongside their tutors to overcome the barriers enforced by the COVID-19 pandemic. The Clubs at York College have embraced the introduction of the National Saturday Club’s new online project platform and the launch of an online Summer Show with dedicated pages to celebrate the achievements of York College’s Saturday Clubs.

York College hosts two Saturday Clubs for 13 –16 year olds. Throughout the year, the Art&Design Club has explored a range of disciplines from printmaking and papercutting to sculpture and surface design, as well as gallery visits. Tutor Charlotte Dawson says: “The Saturday Club is the place to access new art skills and meet new people, and is a great way to bridge the transition from school to college.”

This year saw the start of a brand new Club focussing on Media Arts, to expand members’ knowledge and understanding of digital media, from graphics to photography and film. One Club member said: “I really enjoy coming to the Media Arts Club at York College because I have learnt new camera skills and how to use different equipment.”

Lucy Kennedy, CEO of the Saturday Club Trust said: “The National Saturday Club is a partnership with a growing UK-wide network of colleges, universities and cultural institutions. This dynamic and powerful community, works together to transform young people’s lives through creative education and introduces them to a breadth of further study and career opportunities. It is fantastic that York College has expanded their programme to offer two Saturday Clubs as this will give even more young people in the local community the opportunity to study a subject they love for free, build their skills and grow their confidence.”

Applications are open to join the National Saturday Club in 2020/21. It’s a great way for young people to discover their talents, build skills and find out more about future careers. It's free and open to 13–16 year olds of all abilities.
