The York College Hair & Beauty curriculum area has re-branded the College’s training salons, renaming them ‘Inspired’, all areas are fitted out with industry-standard facilities and include two large hairdressing salons, two newly-refurbished Beauty Therapy salons and two brand new Media Make up studios, with prosthetics facilities.
Recently the College has formed a unique product partnership with professional aromatherapy skin care company Eve Taylor. The company’s skincare products (containing the finest ingredients and essential oils) are used exclusively in the new training salons.

In September a new barbering course was introduced into the salons. Students will be fully qualified within the year. Students are learning skills such as cutting and styling men’s hair, colouring and conditioning, as well as beard grooming.
Media Make-up tutor Emma Dobson, is delighted with the new suite of Media Make-up rooms: "As the prosthetics industry is growing along with new and advanced techniques, the College has updated the resources and facilities to meet with industry standards and practice. The new prosthetics work rooms consist of a mixing room in which the students will work with fibreglass, silicones and polyurethane resins. The main prosthetics room has been designed as a functional work room with work benches, sculpting zones and a large area to apply the prosthetics make up. This room also caters for students working with foam latex and cold foams. With these brand new facilities/resources, along with highly skilled staff, our students can create amazing prosthetic and make-up designs to complete their Foundation Degree and BA (Hons) in Media Make-up, Special Effects and Hair Design, validated by York St. John University."

With environmental concerns being so important in the hair & beauty industry, staff and students are fully embracing sustainability issues and are using disposable towels, and looking at ways in which to reduce plastics.
Karen Goodman, Head of Curriculum for Hair, Beauty and Media Make up at York College says: “We are delighted with our newly branded and refurbished salons. York College is a leading training provider for Hairdressing, Beauty Therapy and Media Make-up studies and our students are fortunate to have such an outstanding learning environment in which to work. Looking to the future, we are keen to extend working partnerships with local employers and salon owners, so they can contribute to curriculum development and participate in our students’ education.”
During term-time, the Inspired training salons are open to paying clients - appointments can be made at the Inspired Reception Iin the College atrium), or by telephone; 01904 770254.
