Emma Bexon, aged 42 from Wheldrake, felt proud and emotional graduating in her home city, in York Minster, having achieved an outstanding grade for her PGCE Professional CertEd qualification.
In earlier years Emma enjoyed a successful career as Head of Design UK & Europe at Delta Galil Industries in London. Already having a daughter, she left London, and her dream job, to have twins in 2012. Emma returned to York in 2015 to be a full-time carer for her mother, who has Parkinsons, and when her mother moved to more specialised care she decided the time was right for her to retrain and get her career back on track.
Emma reflects: ”I thought about my options; I had a BSc in Textile Design, a good level of work experience and life maturity - I really felt I could combine these attributes to inspire and teach others, and I wanted to do it. The PGCE qualification felt like a natural progression for me, with the opportunity to rekindle my design experience and industry knowledge.”
Emma studied the PGCE Professional Certificate full-time for a year and says she felt fully supported: “I carried out my practical teaching experience in the College’s Art & Design department which allowed me to be in the staff room with my tutors, and I had an inspirational Mentor - overall it was a very positive learning experience. I also really enjoyed being at York College whilst my daughter studied there too, it gave me a much better understanding of her educational journey.”

After completing her course, Emma was delighted to secure employment at York College as Programme Leader for the Art & Design Level 1 course, and a tutor for the National Saturday Art Club at York College, providing artistic experiences for students aged 13-16. She says: “I feel very fortunate to have been able to enhance my skills to bring about an entirely new career for myself. I want to set high standards for my students and I want to inspire them through their journey at York College, just as I have been.”
