Students studying Extended Diploma Level 3 Creative and Performing Arts (Dance) at the College had the opportunity to join with over 1200 youngers from 56 schools, colleges and groups across Yorkshire to perform at the event, giving an inspirational performance on the theme of ‘changes’. YCPA (York College Performing Arts) along with YCY (York College Youth) performed a David Bowie medley to represent the ‘changes’ within music throughout the artist’s career.

Dance student Charley Benson, aged 18 and formerly of Manor C of E Academy, said it was the first time she had attended the Festival; "It was great to see so many young people enjoying the dancing. Being the oldest group there, I think the younger ones were inspired by our performance.  I am a big David Bowie fan and it was so good to show people that you can dance to all kinds of music, even if the music is unfamiliar. I want to progress to dance college and eventually work in the a creative environment where I can continue to improve and do what I love.  My College course is briliant, I love dancing and performing with my fellow students and the tutors are just excellent."
Fellow student Abbie Newhall, aged 20 and formerly of Roundhay Sixth Form, took up the Extended Diploma in Dance at York College after studying A Levels: "I wanted to study dance to a higher level so I can audition for the top dance schools in the future.  Performing in the Yorkshire Dance Festival was a fantastic experience - it was a great celebration of dance in all its forms.  I hope to study Musical Theatre at one of the top drama schools and have a career in the West End.  I  may also study a further degree in Physics and Maths in order to work as an air crash investigator."

Emma Fawcett, Course Leader for Dance at York College said: “This was a fantastic platform for our students to showcase their talents, and for prospective young dancers to meet with our tutors and current students. Dance students at York College study an intense course covering ballet, contemporary, jazz, commercial, acrobatics, choreography as well as theory and performance units. Former students have successfully progressed to places such as Bird, Urdang, Rambert, London Studio centre, Creative Academy and many more. It is a great course for young people who are serious about a career in the industry.”
