Art & Design students are excited to see an exhibition by former Foundation Diploma student and local artist Angus Vasili in the York College Gallery this month.
Angus Vasili is an emerging artist, a process driven printmaker who uses abstract concepts to define the rules of each of his projects. Working from his studio in York, his work includes layers of photography, architecture and texture.
Combining the mediums screen printing, photography and texture, Angus’ work is highly experimental and constantly evolving. His image generation process is a fast method of experimentation, working on multiple pieces simultaneously, in a loose and intuitive manner allowing his subconscious to guide ideas and creativity. His practice involves many mistakes and happy accidents, using a combination of digital and analogue techniques to create a raw aesthetic.
Angus says: “My fascination with concrete, industrial landscapes and what I recently came to know as ‘brutalism’ has triggered this series of screen prints. Combining photography, texture and printmaking to create a raw aesthetic that resonates with the fundamental material of brutalism.”
Art & Design tutor, Steve Hemingway who runs the gallery space at the College says: “It is great to be able to offer Angus a solo exhibition. He was a great student and he has gone on to do really well after graduating from Liverpool John Moores University with a First Class (Hons) in Graphics and Illustration. Angus has now successfully set up his own practice in York and his prints look fantastic in our Gallery space. The brutalism which is to be found within his work also echoes the contemporary concrete architecture of our College building.”
Brutalista is exhibited in the York College Gallery from 10th September – 18th October 2018
