In recent years local manufacturer MLA, based in Seaton Ross, has employed five Fashion and Design graduates from York College to work on PPE design and manufacture. This year MLA has connected with the College again, working with 2nd year BA (Hons) Fashion Design and Production students on a ‘real-life’ jacket project.
Wanting to launch a clothing brand that was a little more haute couture than MLA’s standard range of personal protective clothing, and after meeting with ‘Linton Tweeds’ (suppliers of bespoke fabric to Chanel for over 80 years) MLA Director Joy Lupton purchased short runs of cloth, which will not be repeated, for the exclusive range of jackets.
The initial stages of the Jacket Project were incorporated into the ‘Professional Practice’ part of the students’ degree course; investigating the markets and outlets for the jackets. Students’ market research took into consideration other brands and price points as well as customer profiling. Finally, the students’ creativity went into production, culminating in three final jacket designs.
Fashion tutor Marie Neal-Smith says: “This project enabled students to work collaboratively and directly with a real client. Having industry links is essential for work-related learning and professional practice.”
MLA Director Joy Lupton commented: “The students impressed me with their enthusiasm, creative skills and unique designs. It was a pleasure working with them, choosing elements from each of their designs and then deciding on three final samples. It was exciting to see the designs turn into product, made out of some of Britain’s finest textiles. Soon we will see the jackets on the catwalk at the York College Fashion Show. Being part of such a special project with such inspired young designers was a privilege and I hope the students enjoyed the experience.”
The final three jacket designs will appear on the catwalk at the York College Fashion Show at the Principal York on 17th May. Tickets are still available for the 4.30pm Show - available from the College's Finance Office.
