The five awards in the categories; A Levels, Vocational, Higher Education/Adult, Foundation Maths and Foundation English, were awarded to the following students:

A Level Student of the Year - Phoebe Frere (A Levels in Computer Science, Maths and Further Maths. Formerly of Joseph Rowntree School

Phoebe has been a tremendously hard-working, enthusiastic student and a joy to teach in the classroom; working happily with fellow students and always ready to contribute and participate. Not missing a single class, in Maths Phoebe has been a supportive and helpful student, volunteering at Open Events to speak to prospective students and participating in marketing activities on behalf of the College. In her Computer Science class Pheobe set a very high standard in her coursework and asked pertinent questions to cast light on both coursework and examined content and she approached tasks with a positive and enquiring mind. Her Computer Science tutor, Val Roddis, says: “I wish we could clone her - she will be successful in all her future endeavours.”

Vocational Student of the Year - Finlay East (Performing Arts - Musical Theatre student). Formerly of Woldgate College

Finn’s enthusiasm, focus and energy is infectious. His willingness to go the extra mile in his practical work has seen him support his peers in first year Musical Theatre as well as stepping in last minute for the second year Musical Theatre Children’s Theatre performance in December, when illness struck. He has worked hard to develop his academic skills, and has achieved distinctions across the board in his practical and written work. He is a kind, thoughtful and courteous student who always has the best interests of others as a priority, whilst staying extremely focused on his own future, which will no doubt see him gain a place at drama school when he auditions next year. All his tutors, across singing, dance and acting describe him as a pleasure to teach with immense potential beyond his time at York College.

Student of the Year - Higher Education/Adult: Benjamin Porter (PGCE student). Formerly of Norton College

Ben has been a great force within the PGCE team, taking a positive and dynamic approach to his studies. Working positively with his mentor, other tutors and trainees, he created and maintained highly effective learning environments. Having successfully completed his PGCE qualification, Ben now works as a part-time tutor at York College.

Student of the Year - Foundation Maths: Lyla Gentle- Carpentry and Joinery student, alongside Maths and English (St John’s Catholic School for the Deaf)

When Lyla joined her maths class in September 2016 she openly confessed to hating maths and not being able to do it. Like most students in a similar position Lyla was happy to avoid anything which she found difficult, however her hard work has enabled her to completely turn this around. Fast forward a full academic year and Lyla is now confident and happy to work independently. With excellent attendance, her focus, commitment and effort in class has been exemplary. Lyla’s new found confidence will hopefully see her achieve an improved maths grade this year.

Student of the Year - Foundation English: Kimberley Mainprize – General Education student. Formerly of Manor C of E Academy

Kim has worked hard in class and is completely driven, with an exemplary attendance record. She has contributed more and more into the verbal collaborations of tasks and gained in confidence, and her broadened vocabulary has become more sophisticated. Kimberley has embraced any feedback given to her, both verbal and written, and incorporated this into her next task with positive results. Always completing homework, with a great work ethic, her pleasant and polite nature makes her a student any tutor would be overjoyed to teach. Kim has a keen interest in her studies and enjoys what she does, and her goal is to move on to A levels next year at York College. Hopefully Kim will achieve a GCSE grade which reflects her hard work and progression during the academic year.

They are superb role models; demonstrating commitment to their studies and a generosity of spirit to the wider College community. They have each worked well with their tutors, accepted support when needed and in turn have been supportive towards their peers. I wish them every success for the future as they progress to the next stage of their careers.”
