During Open Doors 2017 Week, students on the Step Up into Construction programme were inspired by a visit to York’s Piazza to see the workings of a live construction site, learning how to start a career in the construction industry.
The six week Step Up into Construction project, aimed at the unemployed, offers a range of support for those who want careers in construction, as well as apprenticeships and further training.
Sue Hirst, from York College’s Business Development Unit explains: “Visits to live construction sites are a valuable part of this programme and being able to see what construction is taking place in York is essential to inspire those who have shown a desire to work in the industry.”
The visit to the University of York’s Piazza site was led by IRV Construction, the main contractor on the three-storey learning centre development at the University's Campus East.
Open Doors Week is a national campaign highlighting the unique chance to go behind the scenes of major ‘live’ construction sites across England, Scotland and Wales. Providing an opportunity for people to discover how buildings and structures in the community are constructed, and the chance to find out about the diverse range of skills and professions needed on site.
