York College hospitality and travel & tourism students played an important role in York’s Mayor Making Ceremony this year; hosting, feeding and serving over 150 honoured guests at the Lord Mayor's Inauguration luncheon in York’s Assembly Rooms.
Cllr Dave Taylor was officially appointed as the Rt Hon Lord Mayor of York at a ceremony in the Guildhall on 26th May 2016. Guests including the Civic Party, outgoing Civic Party, councillors and council officers then processed through the city centre, led by Superintendent of York Police, Supt. Adam Thomson and accompanied by the York Guard and the York Waits, to a celebratory private luncheon in York’s Assembly Rooms where York College students hosted and facilitated the event.
Apprentice chefs from York College cooked the Inauguration meal with the support of hospitality students running the front of house operation. The College’s Travel & Tourism students also supported the event, looking after guests and ensuring all ran smoothly.
Tutor Rianne Hughes said: "This was a superb occasion for our students to be involved in, providing a fantastic learning opportunity for our apprentice chefs and hospitality students who catered on such a grand scale. Event management is something many of our Travel & Tourism students what to do for a career and for them to have this real life experience was so valuable. They put in to practice what they have learned in the classroom; working on the logistical side of the event, ensuring guests were looked after and seated in the correct places. They provided liaison between the guests and staff whilst our hospitality students were busy serving. All our students did well on the day and it was a lovely occasion for us to work together as a team."
Cllr Dave Taylor was sworn in to office and Mr Jonathan Tyler took over the role of Sheriff . A few days later York's new Mayor and Mayoress visted the College to say a personal thank you to the students who had participated in the success of the Mayor Making luncheon, presenting each student with a certificate.
