York College is very proud of former A Level student Oscar Powell for his outstanding performance on the winning Peterhouse Cambridge team in the University Challenge final, beating opponents St Johns Oxford by 215 points to 30.
Miggy Biller, Head of Maths and coordinator of Oxbridge applications at York College says: “I am delighted for Oscar and the rest of the Peterhouse team; they showed a tremendous range of knowledge, answering the questions with enthusiasm and humour, and were very quick off the mark. The final, which was filmed last year, has been a closely guarded secret for Oscar and those close to him. It’s a relief that the cat is finally out of the bag and everyone can relax and enjoy their victory.”
Miggy adds: “Oscar came to York College from All Saints R C School and it is wonderful for the school to be able to celebrate his success too. He left York College in 2013, achieving excellent A Level grades to progress to Cambridge University to study Natural Sciences. Whilst at College he was very enthusiastic about University Challenge, often wanting to set up informal competitions with fellow students – it’s fantastic that he’s had the opportunity to be on the series and even better the winning team!”
“Oscar knows lots about lots of things. He is also an excellent linguist. It’s no surprise really that he was selected for the Peterhouse team and that he gave storming performances throughout the different rounds, and especially in the final in which he impressively answered the majority of the starter questions. He has blossomed over the years and in fact has become a bit of a York College mascot! University Challenge is great fun for all the teams involved and I know Oscar made many friends throughout the filming process. He keeps in touch with us at College and he’s a great supporter of our current Oxbridge students. “
