Everyone at York College is delighted for Miggy Biller, Head of Maths, who was awarded an MBE in the New Year’s Honours List. Her MBE is in recognition of exceptional contribution to maths teaching in the Further Education sector, delivering inspirational teaching to thousands of students over the last 44 years.
Miggy joined York College (then York Sixth Form College) in 1988 and was appointed Leader of Mathematics in 1996. Taking on the role of Curriculum Leader for Maths & Numeracy in 2001, she became Head of Maths in 2008.
York College’s Maths department, graded Outstanding by Ofsted (December 2013), provides a first-class learning environment, where Miggy’s inspirational teaching is legendary. Students studying A Level Maths enjoy the subject and often succeed well beyond their expectations.
As the College’s Oxbridge coordinator, Miggy supports high-flying students through the Oxbridge application process. Over the years, hundreds of York College students have successfully progressed to Oxford and Cambridge Universities, and other top quality institutions, with many going on to do great things and enjoying high level careers.
An expert in her field, Miggy co-ordinates the regional MEI branch (Mathematics in Education and Industry – Innovators in Mathematics Education), a forum of maths teachers from the local area. Her knowledge of the subject is extraordinary.
Miggy’s unstinting support for her students goes above and beyond. One former maths student, Daniel Lightwing, was supported by Miggy throughout his selection process for the British International Maths Olympiad team - when they won four silver medals and a bronze in 2006. Earlier this year Daniel’s personal success was documented in the film ‘X+Y’ and it was with great pride that Miggy attended the film’s London premiere.
Principal of York College Alison Birkinshaw comments: “I join staff and students at York College in congratulating Miggy on her MBE. We all know she is thoroughly deserving of this honour. Miggy’s passion for Maths, her exemplary teaching and her unstinting support for students is quite remarkable. We are extremely thankful for her contribution to Maths teaching in the Further Education sector and her outstanding support for students at York College.”
