York College Gallery is pleased to be showcasing the Headless In a Beat Motel exhibition by artist Desmond Brett in the York College Gallery (2nd - 26th November 2015). The exhibition is a new body of work by Brett that has come together quickly and intuitively for the gallery space. Brett is a lecturer in Fine Art at York St John University who trained at The Slade, University College London, and is a member of the Royal British Society of Sculptors.
Brett’s work tends towards the intuitive, where materials - both raw and found - are articulated and transformed into sculptures in response to remembered experiences or the transcription of improvised drawings. He considers his sculptures as allusions to events, things, moments and memories. His work is (as much as possible) non-narrative and he tries to eschew nostalgia in favour of sculptures that engage with space, form, site and materiality.
Brett says of his show at York College Gallery “The works made for this exhibition have been made within a short timespan and as such, have not been wholly thought through, paced around ad infinitum, anguished over interminably or pored over incessantly. It is highly probable that such conditions have resulted in sculptures that are flawed, ill-considered, problematic and inevitably, unresolved.”
Curator of the exhibition programme Steven Hemingway says: “We are really pleased to be hosting a solo show by artist Desmond Brett. York College Gallery is such a fantastic space to exhibit in and the footfall of visitors is in its thousands. The space is not just for those who are interested in art and design but it is there to give all students and staff, whatever subject they are interested in, or role they have within the College, the opportunity to experience the work of artists who are engaged with experimental approaches and often quite challenging practices. I have admired Brett’s work for a number of years now and feel that he will bring something very unique and different to the gallery space”.
Headless in a Beat Motel runs from 2nd - 26th November 2015 . The York College Gallery is open to the public Monday to Friday (9.00am – 5.00pm) and Saturday (9.00am – 12noon).
