A performing arts group enjoyed a visit from two former students who were once in their shoes and have gone onto great success in the TV, film and theatre industries. Mhairi Calvey and Dan Elmes studied the National Diploma in Performing Arts (Acting) from 2005 to 2007.

Since leaving College, Mhairi has starred in a number of exciting roles across TV and film and has recently won the ‘Best Actress in a Short Film’ award at the Los Angles Film Festival. She also owns her own production company ‘Key Screen Productions’, an acting academy in which she passes on the skills learnt at York College such as how to gain roles within the industry and how to present professionally. She is also on the Board of Directors for Eye Films and has her own charity ‘Think Differently Do Differently’, which supports people with depression. Dan progressed to Birmingham School of Acting and has since worked extensively in theatre, both in the UK and abroad.

Current acting students were able to ask Mhairi and Dan questions about gaining roles within the competitive industry, different acting professions such as Theatre in Education and personal highlights and experiences. Mhairi and Dan in turn advised the students on making contacts, carefully considering any roles they are offered and how best to break into the worlds of TV, film and theatre respectively.
