The York College Hospitality & Catering division’s involvement in the York Food Festival has stepped up a level with two hospitality students winning the first heat of the Festival’s Junior Chef Competition.
York College hosted the competition with eleven chefs from the region competing, five of which were from the College. The competitors were tasked with cooking two courses; a main course and dessert, celebrating Yorkshire produce, using a budget of £15, which had to be produced within 40 minutes. Out of the four junior chefs selected to go through to the final, two are York College hospitality students; Nicola Simpson (aged 27) a Level 3 professional chef who works at the Mended Drum in Huby and Josh Phillips (18) studying a Level 2 professional chef who works at Ate O’clock in York.
Karen Horsman, Hospitality tutor at York College said: “All our students in the competition did extremely well and were a credit to the College and the Division. Nicola and Josh coped particularly well under pressure, producing some really excellent dishes. They will progress to the next round of the competition which culminates in a cook-off at the York Food Festival in Parliament Street on 22nd September.
As part of the Food Festival York College Hospitality staff and students are also working in collaboration with The Star Inn The City and The Pheasant Hotel to host an event at the Guildhall on Monday 21st September, tickets are £35 per head available from the Food festival website, with proceeds going to The British Heart Foundation.
A few days later, on 24th September, the College will host its own Food Festival dinner in Ashfields training restaurant at York College. Staff and students invite the public to celebrate ‘food in words and pictures’ with a decadent tasting menu at a cost of £25 per head. Contact York College on 01904 770253 to make a booking.
