Final year Extended Diploma Dance students enjoyed an exciting half term in Paris at the European Dance Championships. Not only did they place first in Contemporary, Commercial and Jazz, they won the European Dance Title as overall competition winners.
Their tutor, Emma Fawcett, also won an award for her fantastic choreography. She said: “I’m really glad we did it, it was a great experience. Our success made all the travelling worthwhile!”
Emma first had the idea to attend the European Dance Championships when she received a flyer about the event. She discussed it with her class, and the students were all really keen to attend.
When asked what the best thing about the event was, student Bryony Aspinall (formerly of Selby High School) answered: “Winning! We went along thinking that we wouldn’t even place in anything, then we won everything and our tutor even got an award.” Ryan Hughes added: “There was a great group spirit between us, we all got on really well”.
Emma was delighted to receive an email from the event organisers regarding the exceptional behaviour of the York College group. They were the “judges’ favourite”, receiving the highest overall mark in the competition for one of their performances.
Aside from the competition, the students made the most of the rest of their time in Paris, making it to Disneyland. Not only did they get to spend time in the Disneyland Paris parks, they were also part of the pre-parade there! Student Ellie Plowman (formerly of Tadcaster Grammar School) commented: “It was a magical trip; we’re like a family, so it was great to spend time together in a family park.”
The students will be performing the award-worthy pieces as part of their final marked performances later this year, so there is still chance to see the trophy-winning team in action.
