As a parent you know that this is a crucial time for your son or daughter when making decisions for their future career paths and deciding where and what to study. At York College we want to help support you in what can seem like a daunting decision making process. Some of our frequently asked questions are listed below.
College or sixth form, which is best?
York College does offer a different environment to a school sixth form. Students learn in a more adult environment, and our aim is to equip students with research and study skills, as well as the confidence and self-discipline that will help them stand on their own two feet as independent learners.
We know that this environment may not suit all students; however our students tell us that they enjoy the more mature environment that College gives them, enabling them to be treated as adults, whilst still receiving the highest quality support and guidance. This environment promotes self motivation, good time management skills and prepares them for what university or employed life will be like. It is also a great chance to take part in a huge range of extra curricular activities, unmatched by smaller school sixth forms, and is also a fantastic way of meeting new friends with similar interests.
When should my son/daughter/ward apply?
Your son/daughter/ward can apply in Year 11 as soon as they feel happy with their preferred course/s, and we would advise that they send in their application as soon as they can and no later than the Easter holidays to have the best chance of securing a place on the courses they have chosen. Please note that we will still accept applications that we receive after the Easter holidays.
If they are undecided about which courses to apply for, they can come along to our Open Events and Taster Days to speak to tutors and try out courses for themselves. For any further information please call the Schools Liaison team on 01904 770239.
What will it cost for my child to study at York College?
If your child is under 19 on the 31st August before their course starts they will not have to pay tuition fees for most courses. However if your child is aged 19 or over, they will be responsible for paying tuition fees for their courses unless they fall into certain categories.

Once your son/daughter/ward has made an application to the College there is a carefully structured process of advice and guidance that they will follow to ensure that they have as much information as possible about the course/s they are applying for. They will also have chance to meet subject tutors, ask questions and get specialist guidance on any other courses that might be more suitable. Some of our frequently asked questions are listed below.
My son/daughter/ward has accepted a conditional offer but has changed their mind about which subject/s they would like to do. What do we do?
Depending on the change, another interview with a tutor from the new subject area may be required to establish if the course is suitable and confirm a conditional offer.
What if my son/daughter/ward does not get the GCSE grades they need?
We know that students don't always get the grades that they were predicted. The main thing is for them not to worry. They should still come along to the enrolment appointment that they have been given. Tutors will be able to discuss all options and advise them about the courses available. This may be looking at alternative courses or a lower level course in the same subject area where possible.
Can my son/daughter/ward apply to more than one college/sixth form?
Yes, students can apply to as many different places as they would like. They can then decide, through research, visits and taster days where they would like to study.
When does my son/daughter/ward start at College?
All students with offers of places to start in September are sent a letter inviting them to come and enrol on their course or subjects. The letter specifies a date and time they should come to College.
If they have not received a letter by mid August, have misplaced the letter or are unsure of the arrangements, please call the Admissions Team on 01904 770397 and they will confirm the date and time for enrolment for your son/daughter/ward.
Once your son/daughter/ward starts College we work with them closely to make sure they settle in to their studies and College life. We also know it is very important to keep in touch with you throughout the year so you feel as informed as possible about your child's progress and the various support services on offer.
Welcome Evenings and Progress Reports
Throughout your child/ward's time at College, you are kept informed and involved through a number of activities including:
A September Welcome Evening where you have the chance to meet your child/ward's Progress Tutor, and receive their contact details eg College telephone number and email address.

Autumn and Spring Term Progress Reports
Parent and Carer Evenings are held after receipt of your child/ward's Progress Report, providing an opportunity to discuss their progress and raise any concerns or issues you may have.
Parents and Carers are also asked to take part in our Parent and Carer Satisfaction surveys. These are sent out with Progress Reports.
If you wish to discuss any aspect of your child/ward's education and progress please do not hesitate to contact their Progress Tutor throughout the year.
Contacting Parents and Carers
Students who are under the age of 16 or who are deemed to be a 'vulnerable adult' are informed that, as a condition of their enrolment, the College will ordinarily communicate with their parents or carers regarding the following:
- absence from College (activities)
- academic progress
- any matters of concern
Signing the College enrolment form implies your child/ward's consent to the College communicating with you as their parents or carers.
Data Protection Legislation states that any child over the age of 16 reserves the right to withdraw their consent for the College to contact you. Should this happen, we are required to get express [written] permission from the student to allow us to inform you that this consent has been withdrawn. In cases where we do not get this permission we will strongly encourage the student to inform you that they have withdrawn this consent.
Students who withdraw their consent to contact parents or carers must provide the College with an emergency contact; the individual named as the emergency contact should know that they have been named and confirm that they are happy to act in that capacity.
If consent is not withdrawn by your child/ward, the College will continue to contact you until the student leaves the College, or reaches the age of 18, whichever is the later date.
In the event that a student is taken ill, the College will contact the person identified by the student, and held within the College’s student records, as their ‘Emergency Contact’.
Students' attendance is monitored for each lesson. If your child/ward does not attend a lesson, and they have not notified their tutors that they will be absent, our Attendance and Retention Liaison Officers will ring you. If you cannot be reached, a letter will be sent out and a disciplinary hearing may be arranged.
If your child/ward is unable to attend College due to any reason (illness, lateness or unforeseen circumstances) please call 01904 770399 preferably by 12noon on each day of absence.
Message from the Principal
"As many parents know, we survey parents and carers of our students on a very regular basis so that we can understand quickly what we are doing well and what the College needs to improve. I am grateful for all the responses from parents to our last survey when they identified many ways in which the College was successfully supporting our students to achieve. However, we are keen to understand how we could improve communication further.
What have we done?
- We have reviewed every aspect and every piece of communication with parents to try to identify how we might improve this area of our work.
- We have identified that frequently we communicate directly with our students and copy the information separately to parents. If students are not progressing as we might like, it is possible that they might prefer parents not to see the letter from us. Therefore, I would request that any parent wishing to have more information about their son or daughter's progress contact the college directly.
- The College is also investing in Promonitor which is a piece of software which will allow parents to log in to the College system to check their son or daughter's progress directly on line. They will be able to check attendance, assignment completion and progress, and other matters relating to their child's progress and we believe that this will really help improve communication and student success. We plan to have this in place during the 2015-16 academic year, having piloted it 'in house' first. You should be reassured that we will make sure data protection requirements are fully met with regard to who can access personal data.
I would urge any parent or carer who wishes to have further information from the College to just contact us by telephone, email or letter and we will respond to you as quickly as we can.
