Graduation is always a fantastic occasion to see our students sharing their success sharing their success with the family and friends who have supported them during their studies. It is certainly a memorable occasion for all involved and reflects everyone's desire to celebrate the achievements of those completing their higher education studies at York College.
Each year we celebrate the success of our higher education students at a graduation ceremony held in the heart of York, at the magnificent York Minster. After more than 20 years of development and expansion of higher education at York College we are always proud and amazing at what our students have achieved. Many have completed their studies alongside their very demanding jobs, family pressures and health problems, in addition to everyday trials and tribulations.
Every year we seek to celebrate the success of our Higher Education students at a graduation ceremony held in central York. This year the ceremony is to be held at York Minster on Thursday 12th September 2019.
This event promises to be a memorable and special occasion for our graduating students and their families.
By now eligible students should have received their graduation packs with details of how to book their places but we hope the FAQs below will answer any questions you might still have. If you still need to speak to us, call the marketing team’s events officer, Connie Parkinson, on 01904 770223.
Do I have to book a place beforehand?
Yes. Absolutely! To book your place please complete this booking form: https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/YKSL6JV
Places are limited and various regulations mean we have to strictly control the number of attendees and know exactly who is coming on the day. Also, the ceremony is highly choreographed, don’t worry our staff will be on hand to help you with the moves.
This year students are asked to arrive at The Merchant Taylors Hall before moving to York Minster; all of this has to be arranged in detail prior to the day and if we’re not expecting you we can’t arrange for you to be a part of the ceremony.
What if I book then find I can’t come?
Don’t worry, just let us know you’ll not be coming and we’ll alter the running order, we’d much rather know in advance if you have to cancel.
Do I have to attend?
No. The graduation ceremony is not compulsory and not attending won’t affect your qualification. You don’t have to let us know you’re not coming either, if you don’t want to come just don’t return your form and we’ll not expect you.
How much does graduation cost?
While we don’t charge for the ceremony itself, there is a charge for gown hire. Please visit gown hire specialists Ede and Ravenscroft's website for prices and to order.
Proceeds from the gown hire do not go to the College.
Do I have to wear a gown?
Yes. The ceremony is a formal occasion and you are required to wear the academic dress of the College.
When do I have to return my gown?
Gowns need to be returned straight after the ceremony has finished; they need to be returned to where you collected them at The Merchant Taylors Hall. Gowning returns will be closed at 9pm; if you do not get them back before this time you will be charged (more details can be found on Ede and Ravenscroft's website.
How many guests can I bring?
Each graduand may bring two guests to the gowning and robbing pre event at The Merchant Taylors Hall, tickets will need to be shown on arrival these will be sent out prior to the event in the post once you have completed the booking form.
The actual Graduation Ceremony at The Minster is an unticketed event therefore you are able to bring as many guests as you like.
