The list below showcases the Adult Learning courses we offer here at York College and you can now experience the courses in our free taster sessions! We have experienced tutors for each session and the courses are taught in the College’s state-of-the-art surroundings. Register now to secure your place and discover something new!

Basic French for Your Holiday
Two hours of basic French introducing you to essential phrases to help you get by with shopping, ordering meals and finding your way around on your French holiday. Suitable for absolute beginners and those with very basic knowledge of French.
Beginners British Sign Language (BSL)
A two hour introductory taster session to get you started on BSL, including basic greetings, numbers and introducing yourself. Suitable for complete beginners with no previous experience of BSL.
Introduction to Patisserie
A two hours introduction session to Patisserie and Confectionery. Experience a taster session from a highly skilled chef in producing desserts, experiencing working in industrial kitchen and acquire tips in finishing and presenting skills to make dessert to master chef standards.
Introduction to Business Law
This two hour session will offer an overview of Business and Contract Law. The session will outline law that relates to Business-to-Business and Business-to-Customer interactions.
English and Maths Skills Check
Do you need an English and/or maths qualification for work? For an Access course? Or just to prove you can? Come along and have a go at an assessment and discuss the results and next steps with an expert.
Paraffin Wax Application with Hand Massage
You will be carrying out a treatment as this will give an insight into what can be carried out in classes. A demonstration of a paraffin wax hand treatment will be carried out and you will have the opportunity to have this carried out on you. You will practice on each other and swap over. You will then be taken on a tour of the Beauty Therapy Department.
An Introduction to Reflexology
An interesting and informative session where you can sample reflexology for yourself and discover the many positive health benefits it can offer.
Knitting for beginners, or if you are a bit more confident, try out lace knitting! Please supply your own needles and yarn (4mm needles and double knitting wool suggested).
Introduction to Sociology
Every year, just before exam times or assignment deadlines, the grandmothers of many students suddenly pass away. Come along to today's session to see how sociology can help us explain this strange phenomenon!
Learn and develop your skills in digital photography with this two hour taster session.
In this two hour session, design and produce a one-off piece of creative jewellery by exploring carving and casting processes.
Introduction to Print Making
Come and create an edition of beautiful prints using the versatile technique of drypoint etching.
Come and create a garment to take away using some of the industrial methods used in fashion manufacturing.
Pottery (throwing a pot)
You’ve seen it on TV - now experience it first-hand! Come and learn how to throw a pot using the potter’s wheel!
Introduction to Bricklaying
Ever wanted to learn how to build a brick BBQ? Then this taster session is for you! You will need to bring safety footwear and overalls to this session.
Introduction to Carpentry and Joinery
Ever wanted to learn how to hang a door? Come along to this two hour taster session to find out how! You will need to bring safety footwear and overalls to this session.
Introduction to Stone Carving
Ever wanted to learn how to carve stone? Come along to this two hour taster session to find out how! You will need to bring safety footwear and overalls to this session.
Introduction to Painting and Decorating
Ever wanted to learn the art of wallpapering? Then this two hour taster is for you! You will need to bring safety footwear and overalls to this session.
Introduction to Plastering
Ever wanted to learn the basics of skimming a wall? Come along and find out how! You will need to bring safety footwear and overalls to this session.
Introduction to Strength and Conditioning
In this session, you will discover the ways in which Prehabilitation (solving the problem before it exists) operates. You will learn about identifying, understanding and treating injury risk factors for those using a gym.
Experience play from a child’s perspective
Talk and discussion on careers in childcare, with practical activities to be experienced through a child’s eyes. This session will cover Careers Working with Children, Advice and Guidance and the Importance of Play and Learning. Some practical activities will be ‘messy’!
Mini Health Clinic
A session aimed at providing a mini health check. You will have your blood pressure measured, calculate your BMI, discuss weight control and learn the benefits of well-being and a healthy lifestyle.
A session for anybody considering any of our Access courses. Come along and find out about the courses, have an interview and be offered a place to study here in September. Bring your certificates for any qualifications you have with you.
Introduction to Science
Hands on experiments in biology and chemistry. This may be particularly relevant if you’re interested in studying GCSE Biology or Access Biology/ Chemistry.
Living in the Online World
An introduction to Digital Technologies exploring digital design, web development, and cyber security in 3 x 30 minute segments.
Each session will run from 10.00am – 12.00pm but please arrive for 9.30am to register your arrival. Refreshments including tea and coffee will be available.

Please only register for one course, as each course will run for the full two hours.
Registration for the Adult Learning Taster Morning will close at 12 noon on Friday 11th May.Each taster session has capacity limits and so registering for the sessions will be on a first come, first serve basis.
Please feel free to attend on the morning without registering for information and advice on the Adult Learning courses available, but please note you might not be able to attend a taster session if the session is full. Please contact the marketing on 01904 770222 for more information.
