Does the course fee include associated membership and exam fees?

For all our courses the exam fee is included within the course fee.

Some courses may require you to purchase an associated membership, for example AAT courses require a membership to the Association of Accounting Technicians. 

Is there a KIT/Uniform that I must have for the course?

Some courses require you to have a KIT, and Uniform, such as Hair & Beauty, Motor Vehicle, Construction, Catering and Engineering courses. Details will be provided during enrolment.

Do I need to secure a placement before I can apply/enrol?

Some of the adult learning courses in Early Years and Education require students to have a placement

This would be a condition of their offer of a place and ideally need to be secured prior to the course start date. 

How many hours of placement do I need?

This varies by course and will be discussed during the application and enrolment process.

The placement time is completed alongside your course.

How and when can I access my timetable?

We will send you an email with instructions on how to access your timetable once your enrolment is complete.

What days am I in college?

The days you will attend college differ by course. 

Full time students will receive their timetable after enrolment is complete.

Disclosure Barring Service Check (DBS)

Why do I need a disclosure barring service check?

Disclosure and Baring Service (DBS) checks for students who will be working with children or vulnerable adults in a variety of establishment and healthcare settings, are required and identified in ‘Course Fees’.

Do I have to pay for disclosure barring service check?

DBS checks are compulsory for some courses and students are usually responsible for the cost of this.

The college bursary may cover the cost for eligible students.

Do I need an interview?

Yes for Full time, Apprenticeship, Higher Education and some part-time course. You will be offered a time to attend after your application has been processed.

Can I come into the college to speak to someone about enrolling?

How do I sign up for student days?

We offer New Student days for prospective Year 11 students to come along and spend half a day experiencing the courses they would like to study or have already applied for.

Finance

Can I get help to pay for my course?

Fee remission is available for some courses subject to meeting government eligibility funding rules.

Example:

Currently, if your personal income is below £15,736.50 a year, fee remission is available for selected courses, and proof of income will be requested at the time of enrolment.  

Similarly, if you are unemployed and in receipt of a benefit you may also be eligible for a fee remission.

Student over 19 years and above aiming to study a full level 3 and above course may qualify for an Advanced Learner Loan or a student loan from Student Finance England.

Can I get a bursary?

If you are studying a Further Education course and your household income is below £25,000 per year, you may be eligible for financial help from York College whilst studying.

The bursary is not applicable to students studying an Apprenticeship or Higher Education course.

Does the bursary pay my rent/living expenses?

Unfortunately, the York College bursary does not cover rent and living expenses. The bursary can, however, provide financial support towards travel, essential course costs, childcare and meals while at college, subject to meeting the eligibility criteria.

What funding/financial support I can get to help me while I am studying?

There are a range of funding options available to students, subject to meeting the government eligibility funding rules.

E.g.  If you are studying a Higher Education (degree level) course you may be eligible for student finance, including Tuition Fee Loans, Maintenance Loans, and additional grants.

How and when can I apply for funding?

You can apply for your Student Loan or Advanced Learner loan after you have been offered a place on your chosen course. 

To apply for the Advanced Learner Loan, you will need an institute code, which will be issued in the form of a letter/email from our admissions team along with your offer letter. 

Student Finance funding normally opens for application towards the end of February.

We have several college coaches servicing both the local and wider area, there are also several public services buses that stop near to the college on regular basis.

Homestay accommodation is available and is arranged directly by the College.
