Double win for York College at the NHS Apprenticeship Awards

York College is delighted that two Business Administration apprentices, who work at York Hospital, have been honoured by the NHS.

At a glittering awards ceremony held at the Hilton Hotel in Leeds, ten NHS apprentices from across the Yorkshire and the Humber region were honoured for their work at various hospitals and health organisations around the region. Two of the honoured apprentices came from York College.

Richard Prodger, a Business and Administration apprentice from York College, who works at York Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, was awarded the title ‘NHS Non-Clinical Apprentice of the Year'. Chloe Phillips, who has completed her apprenticeship with York College, was highly commended.

Chief Executive of NHS Yorkshire and the Humber, Bill McCarthy, said: “Apprenticeships are providing increasing opportunities for staff to demonstrate their skills across clinical and non-clinical roles and are for both young people and those entering health care settings at all ages. They are also an important route for existing staff to gain new qualifications in a current or new role.

“Yorkshire and the Humber has established and maintained an excellent track record of supporting apprentices in a wide range of settings - helping to improve the quality of the services we provide as well as providing a good career pathway for many of our staff.”

Sue Hirst, Employer Engagement QA Manager at York College is delighted for both apprentices saying: “It is fantastic to have two York College apprentices recognised for their developing work skills. Both were praised by NHS line managers and College assessors for their commitment and motivation at work and at College.”

Natalie Mcmillan, Assistant Director of Resourcing at York Hospital said: “We're delighted that Richard and Chloe have been recognised for their work. The apprenticeship scheme is something we're keen to promote - there are so many opportunities available across a range of departments including laboratory medicine and business administration. We are looking to recruit to Richard's previous apprentice post as he has now secured a permanent position within the department.”
