A team of students from York College reached the final of the regional Inter-school Mock Trial Competition 2012, competing against Silverdale High School, Sheffield. The Mock Trial was heard by a real judge and jury at Sheffield Crown Court on 20th June.
The Mock Trial team were a group of students who study A Levels in a range of subjects including Law, Critical Thinking, Psychology and Sociology.
In the preliminary round the York College Mock Trial team argued against the death penalty. The team included three Norwegian students who gave a compelling and moving case with reference to the tragic massacre of young people in Norway. They were scored on their performance by a team of legal academics and lawyers and won the case hands down.
Said Clive Broadley, Law tutor at York College: “The competition provides a first-class learning experience, particularly for students interested in the legal profession. The final was a very serious affair, with a proper judge and jury. Our students did a fantastic job and argued the case well, they were confident and assertive and deserve our congratulations.”Back to News Stories listing
